  • MozillaCacheView 1.26-Explore the items Firefox has cached

Your cache can be a treasure trove of items and files that you may have thought were either gone forever or maybe didn’t even knew existed.

MozillaCacheView is a small utility that reads the cache folder of Mozilla and Netscape Web browsers, and displays a list of all files currently stored in the cache. For each cache file, you can view the URL, content type, file size, last modified time, last fetched time, expiration time, fetch count, server name, and more. You can easily select one or more items from the cache list, and then extract the files to another folder, or copy the URLs list to the clipboard.

MozillaCacheView is great if for instance, you want to find a YouTube video or FLV file that you’ve recently watched but don’t want to download again. It would be useful if you could preview what each file contains before opening it because although you can see what type of file you’re looking at, you have no idea what it contains until you open it in your browser.

MozillaCacheView is a useful utility for anyone that needs to explore their cache in more detail than Firefox can normally give you.

  • infoRSS 1.2.0-Ticker-style RSS feed reader right in your browser

Everybody has their favorite way of monitoring their RSS feeds, whether it’s in Google Reader, via a desktop client such as FeedDemon or using some other application. If you still haven’t found the perfect solution, however, why not try a Firefox add-on?

InfoRSS is a very simple and unobtrusive application that appears as a ticker tape at the bottom or top of your screen, or in the taskbar. The add-on has extensive configuration options, which means that you can change just about any aspect, from what icons it displays in the ticker to what color the background is. In fact, this is actually one of InfoRSS’ weaker points - there are so many complex and unfamiliar configuration options that it can actually be a little intimidating.

InfoRSS comes pre-programmed with a small selection of RSS feeds, but of course you can add or remove according to choice. Configuring the feeds is actually fairly simple, especially if you keep away from the more complex options. There are actually a few great features among these more advanced choices, such as the ability to automatically sync with an FTP and import OPML files, but you might want to get to know InfoRSS a bit better before you take them on.

In all, whether or not you like InfoRSS will depend on whether or not you’re a fan of the ticker tape format. It’s not for everyone, but if it’s for you, InfoRSS is a great program. It’s subtle, comprehensive and flexible and, best of all, you can mold it completely to your own tastes - what more could you ask for?

InfoRSS is a great in-browser RSS manager for fans of ticker tapes.

  • LimeWire Basic 5.3.6-The world’s fastest P2P file-sharing application, updated

This is the review for the latest release of the most popular peer to peer filesharing application. Current LimeWire users will notice the radical redesign, bringing it aesthetically up to date.

Like Vuze before it, LimeWire appears to be encouraging legal downloads with the LimeWire Store. The library is so far a little limited compared to competitor download stores, but we expect this will expand.

Otherwise it’s business as usual on LimeWire, but with a much simplified and cleaner interface. Because it’s a new release, there are still some bugs, but the basic file sharing functions as well as ever. The new design makes scanning your search results much easier, and downloading files is totally intuitive.

The inbuilt player is still unintrusive and useful for checking audio and video files, but no more. LimeWire goes out of it’s way to check you are aware of the legal implications of illegal filesharing, on installation you have to agree no to infringe copyright, and if you download a file for which LimeWire can’t find a license you will be warned and can stop or continue at your discretion.

The friends function has been much improved. You can sign in with your Gmail, Jabber or LiveJournal accounts, and share files between any of your friends there who are also on LimeWire. This is much easier than tapping out IP addresses, and if enough of your friends use LimeWire, it could become great community sharing tool.

LimeWire searches remain within the P2P network, but you can open torrent files with it, and it functions very well as a torrent download client. This is not the most advertised feature of LimeWire, which may a way of keeping legal challenges at bay, but it’s a shame that you can’t search for torrents within the program.

The official release of LimeWire 5.0 makes for a much improved P2P experience.

  • Avast! Home 4.8.1356-A fully featured and freeware antivirus tool

Some anti-virus programs cause more problems than they solve. Avast! Home Edition anti-virus is thankfully not one of those as it exceeds expectations while remaining free. Lightweight, vigilant and most importantly, effective, this could be the answer to your prayers if you’ve had no luck finding a virus checker you like.

The developers make a point of stressing that this program is strictly not for institutional use – it is designed specifically for the threats most home users face daily. Their philosophy is that efficient home virus protection is essential in preventing users one day being struck by a serious global virus. What impresses you immediately with Avast! is its vigilance. It’s likely that within minutes of installation, you’ll receive a pop up alert due to a Trojan or virus that had been incubating on your PC. If not, rest assured that it won’t be long before Avast! sets off its trademark siren and alerts you that something has been detected. The latest version of

Avast’s antivirus kernel promises 100% detection of ‘In-the-Wild’ viruses (viruses already spreading between users) and excellent detection of Trojan horses. Avast! provides 24 hour protection via its ‘On-Access’ scanner but you can initiate manual scans via the fairly simple user interface. You can start additional modules from here, such as the Virus Chest, Updater or Log Viewer. Another great feature of Avast! is the option to change the skin of this interface. The developer website features practically hundreds of distinctive designs made by aficionados and even offers a guide to designing your own.

Something often overlooked by major virus checking packages is P2P applications installed on your PC but Avast! covers this with a P2P and Instant Messenger shield. Whilst chat applications themselves do not impose any serious security risks in terms of viruses, their less sophisticated file sharing methods can easily lead to virus infections if not properly monitored. With so many infected files on P2P networks such as Kazaa and eMule too, it’s also good to know that Avast! won’t let you open them without quietly checking them first.

The program also features both a Web and Network shield that constantly monitors traffic. The Web Shield acts as a transparent HTTP proxy and is compatible with all major web browsers. One of the truly outstanding features of Avast! is that unlike heavyweights such as Kaspersky or Norton, you hardly notice it working in the background. This is because of a unique feature the developers call ‘Intelligent Stream Scan’ that scans objects on-the-fly, without needing to cache them locally. Even the virus updates are unobtrusive. Avast! downloads the updates gradually and only those that are absolutely essential instead of the whole database. You receive a ‘Virus database has been updated’ voice message every time this has been completed along with a small popup which you can turn off if it annoys you.

There really is little to fault Avast! on in a market that is saturated with too many ineffective virus checkers. Although it doesn’t guzzle resources, if you’re running it on an older machine, you might find it slows you down. Some new users also complain that conducting a simple manual scan is more complicated than it should be but if you’ve spent anytime with virus checkers, you’ll realise that its more than worth your while getting to know this excellent program.

  • TeamViewer 4.1.6873-Simple, fast and secure desktop sharing

Desktop sharing is not just the expert field of tech professionals anymore. Whether you want to show how an application works or simply to explain things on someone else’s PC, you’ll need to find a way to share desktops easily.

TeamViewer offers a simple way of creating desktop sharing sessions with other users whether on a distant PC, local connection or over the internet. Both users will each have an ID and password with which to connect to their session.

Taking control of another PC is a great way to solve issues from a distance and demonstrate things on a desktop without actually being there physically. TeamViewer also allows file transfer and includes a chat function to communicate with your contact.

You can also record sessions and play them back afterward. These can then be used as tutorials or to go back on what you’ve done in previous sessions.

If you dig in the details you’ll be able to choose not only whether to optimize quality or speed, but also configure the amount of access you want to give to your desktop.

The free version of TeamViewer has a number of limitations, and lacks a number of modules like the TeamViewer manager or customer module. If you want more features you’ll have to be ready to pay at least €159 for higher end versions.

TeamViewer is a good program to quickly share desktops with another user. The free version will let you create secure sessions and control what you show to your contact over the internet.
